About the festival

FFSFF was built for a very specific kind of filmmaker: the one who bought a gimbal before finishing a single short, who calls their group chat "the collective," and who has strong opinions about aspect ratio but has never actually exported a final cut. We see you. We are, frankly, you.

Every year, thousands of people who have never sold a ticket, wrapped a shoot on schedule, or paid an actor in anything but "exposure" submit something to us, quietly convinced this is the year the industry finally notices. It will not be this year. It was not last year either. Nobody has told them, so we're telling you instead: the crew t-shirt does not make it a production, and a private Vimeo link is not a distribution deal.

FFSFF exists to give these efforts the ceremony they clearly crave and, technically, do not deserve — a laurel, a stage, and twelve minutes of enthusiastic applause from people who also submitted something. Bring your unfinished trilogy. Bring your 4K drone shot of a car park. We will watch it. We will not necessarily enjoy it. But we will absolutely give it a category.

Award categories

• Best Film Under 90 Seconds — for filmmakers who understood the assignment before we finished writing it.
• Best Use of a Single Extra — awarded to the production that got the most narrative mileage out of one background actor.
• Most Confident Third Act — not necessarily the best third act. Just the most confident.
• Best Film We Argued About — the jury's favourite category. The film itself is almost beside the point.
• Audience Award (Audience of One) — decided by whichever jury member stayed awake the longest.
• Grand Laurel — our top honour. Recipients receive a laurel. We do not supply a plaque.
